Endeavour: The Ship that changed the World
Friday night at Filey Literature Festival
Friday night at the Filey Literature Festival is our traditional nautical history evening — and what a voyage we have in store.
Hosted in the wonderfully atmospheric Filey Sea Cadets hall, decked out with signal flags and naval memorabilia, it is the perfect setting for tales from the sea.
This year we are delighted to welcome Peter Moore to speak about one of the most famous ships in maritime history: HM Bark Endeavour.
Bought by the Royal Navy in 1768 as a humble Whitby collier, Endeavour would become the ship that carried James Cook on his first great voyage of exploration — charting New Zealand, the eastern coast of Australia and surviving the perils of the Great Barrier Reef.
But the ship’s story did not end there. Endeavour witnessed riots in London, the birth of the United States, transported coal, soldiers, scientists and even the remains of the first kangaroo brought back to Britain. Centuries later, NASA would name a space shuttle in her honour.
A handful of tickets remain and can be purchased on the door — just £7.50 to hear one of Britain’s leading naval historians speak on the very Yorkshire coast that gave birth to Endeavour.
